Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift

If you are unhappy with the size, shape, or position of your breasts, you may be considering breast enhancement surgery. But you may not know what type of breast enhancement surgery is better for you: breast augmentation or a breast lift. Both of these procedures can give you better-looking breasts and increase your self-confidence and body image, but breast augmentation primarily adds or restores volume, while a breast lift reduces sagginess and improves the shape of your breast. Which procedure is best for you depends on a number of factors that can only truly be assessed during your personal consultation with Dr. Richard L. Kofkoff, although the information here can serve as general guidelines.

Understanding Breast Enhancement Procedures

Breast augmentation is a procedure in which Dr. Kofkoff inserts implants in the breasts to add volume. Depending on your cosmetic goals, the shape of your breast can be largely preserved, or it can be altered somewhat to create a better-looking breast.

In a breast lift, Dr. Kofkoff removes excess skin from the breast and reshapes the breast mound to create a breast with less sagging and a better shape.

Breast augmentation and breast lift are not mutually exclusive. In fact, Dr. Kofkoff often performs a combination of breast lift with implants. He recommends this for women whose breasts are sagging and also do not have sufficient breast tissue to make an adequate breast mound.

Which Breast Enhancement Procedure Is Right for You?

According to surveys, about 70% of women of all ages are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts, but what they dislike changes with age. Younger women generally desire larger breasts, although a significant fraction want smaller breasts or complain of breast sagginess. Older women generally complain their breasts are too saggy, but some also complain of breasts being too large or too small. So, as a general rule, younger patients desire breast augmentation rather than a breast lift, while older patients desire a breast lift, but the overlap is significant.

More important than your age is your current breasts. Dr. Kofkoff will recommend breast implants if your current breasts are too small or have too small a breast mound to achieve the size breasts you desire. Breast implants can also correct many minor issues with the shape of your breasts, including slight sagging. Dr. Kofkoff will recommend a breast lift if your breasts are significantly sagging, or not the shape you desire, or less firm than you desire. Also crucial is the skin of your breasts. If it is stretched or inelastic, a breast lift is likely to be recommended.

During your personal consultation, Dr. Kofkoff will listen to your aesthetic goals, conduct a physical exam, and make recommendations for how best to reach your goals. He will show you before and after images of women in situations similar to you that have had either a breast lift or breast augmentation to help you make a decision you will be happy with.
