If you elect to undergo a liposuction procedure, it is recommended that you first understand what will happen before, during and after your procedure. Dr. Richard L. Kofkoff takes pride in his communication with his St. Louis, Missouri cosmetic surgery patients and is more than willing to discuss every aspect of your procedure in detail with you prior to scheduling your surgery.
Before Liposuction Surgery
Prior to undergoing liposuction , Dr. Kofkoff will examine you to determine that you are in good physical health. At this time, you should tell him about any past or present medical conditions you have. You will also be informed about every aspect of your liposuction procedure in detail to ensure that you understand everything that will take place. This is the time for you to make sure all of your questions are answered to be certain you know what will happen during and after your procedure.
Dr. Kofkoff places much importance on the communication he has with his patients. He believes that you should be comfortable in fully placing your trust in him to do what is in your best interests for as long as you remain under his care.
The Day of your Liposuction Surgery
On the day of your liposuction procedure, you should have someone available to drive you to and from your appointment. Once you arrive, Dr. Kofkoff will mark your body with a pen to ensure accuracy when removing excess fat. You will be placed under general anesthesia under the care of a very qualified and experienced anesthesia staff so that Dr. Kofkoff can focus his full attention on performing your procedure.
Dr. Kofkoff employs the tumescent technique when performing liposuction on his patients. This involves injecting a large amount of liquid containing epinephrine, lidocaine, and saline into the problem areas. This injection causes the small blood vessels in the area to constrict, reducing bleeding. It also causes the fatty deposits to swell, which firms the area and makes it easier to remove. Once the targeted areas have been prepared, power-assisted liposuction is performed, during which vibration is used to loosen your fat and suction is used to remove it from your body.
After Liposuction Surgery
Depending on the amount of fat removed from your body, you will most likely be allowed to go home once your surgery is completed and you awaken from the anesthesia. If larger amounts were removed, you may need to remain in the surgical center overnight for observation.
Dr. Kofkoff will give you strict instructions to follow in the weeks after your surgery. Prescriptions will be provided so that you have the necessary medications to assist with your recovery. You will be given compression garments to wear for a few weeks and you will gradually experience less swelling and discomfort. As you continue to heal, you will gradually be able to increase your activity levels until you have returned to your normal daily routines.
