Gynecomastia can be caused by several different factors. Some of these may include:
- Hormonal changes during puberty
- Dysfunction of the endocrine glands
- Disease that has affected hormone balance
- Side effects from some medications
When Should Gynecomastia be Treated?
In many cases of gynecomastia, the condition is temporary, resulting from hormonal changes during adolescence. These cases generally resolve themselves over time. If, after several years, an adolescent male still suffers from gynecomastia, surgical treatment may be the most logical option because at this point, it is unlikely that the problem will resolve spontaneously.
Gynecomastia Surgery
During surgery for gynecomastia, liposuction and/or excision of glandular breast tissue is performed. The goal during this surgery is to create a natural breast contour that is typical for a normal, healthy male. This is accomplished in a manner that leaves the smallest possible scar around the areola. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.
Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery
Drains may be used for several days if glandular excision is performed. In most cases, discomfort is mild to moderate. During the first few weeks after surgery, you will be required to wear a compression garment and will be monitored closely by Dr. Kofkoff. Swelling will begin to subside after the first few days and you will begin to see the improvement in your appearance. The final result may not be evident for several months.
